Name

It is an extremely tall variety. The height of this variety can even hide wild elephants when they enter the farm and for this reason it is called as “Kattuyanam” (meaning wild elephant in Tamil).

 

Characteristics of the grain

The rice of this variety is light red in colour and bold in nature.

 

Therapeutic Properties

It is used in the control of diabetes. It’s antioxidant properties have cure for many heart-related diseases.

 

Cooking / Dishes

Flattened rice made from this rice variety is suitable for making rice payasam (a South Indian sweet dish). It is also suitable for the preparation of idly, dosa, idiyappam, flattened rice and porridge.
